Health Book Review: The Prostate by Yosh Taguchi

The prostate gland is probably the most badly "designed" structure found in the human body. Yosh Taguchi, a senior urologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, has written a very good book about the gland called The Prostate: Everything You Need to Know about the Man Gland. The book outlines the gland's function and its ills, and the way in which the ills may be alleviated.

A Review of Stroke: A Comprehensive Guide to "Brain Attacks"

What makes a good health book? The answer can essentially be reduced to one word - information. A good health book should give the reader information about the illness being discussed, about how it is diagnosed and the possible treatments, drugs and their side effects, then present a decent glossary, index and list of community resources. However, there is a caveat to all this - the information must be presented in such a way to be understandable to the general public, but not too simplistic to miss important details.

A Review of The Bates Pocket Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking

Physical assessment is the cornerstone of medicine, nursing and other health professions. A change in physical status is generally what brings a person to see a medical practitioner, and by examining the presenting symptom the practitioner can come up with some type of diagnosis, allowing treatment to be proposed. Further tests will likely be necessary to confirm suspicions, but the starting point of all diagnosis is a hands on assessment of the patient, along with a history of when the symptoms started, what makes them worse, better, and so on.

Fossil Love Story: A Review of Stephen Jay Gould's Wonderful Life

As odd as it may sound, Wonderful Life is a science love story about fossils. The author, the late Steven Jay Gould, loves his subject (paleontology/ evolution), loves the people who worked so hard on the fossils, and above all, loves the strange little organisms that lived and died 530 million years ago.
