The novels blended the reality of daily reservation life with crimes seemingly tied to the spirit world of Navajo belief. In 1987, the Navajo Nation conferred Hillerman with the status of Special Friend of the Dineh.
Dance Hall of the Dead, 's third novel, won him the 1974 Edgar Allan Poe Award, and in 1987 Skinwalkers won the Golden Spur Award.
