"Just like the sky is blue and Christmas is December 25th, I am fat". After a disastrous 12th grade graduation celebration, plus-size Mimi catches a ride from hometown Montreal to Toronto to search for her father - an anonymous sperm donor. Surely he will love her and cherish her for her inner beauty, rather than her less than celebrity magazine outer appearance. Along the way, Mimi begins to accept herself and even - heaven forbid - like herself.
My favourite parts of the story are Mimi's fantasies - her escapes from reality in which she casts herself as Celine Dion's twig-like best friend, a witty confidant to the Queen of England, and a tiara-wearing beauty pageant winner - all impeccably charming and unwaveringly thin. Call Me Mimi by Quebec author is a sweet easy read for middle years and early teens that offers no heavy handed life lesson, but a tiny treat of happiness.| Categories: Reviews, Staff Pick |
