Trouble and unfocused, fourteen-year-old Winston Macdonald Jr. is running away from something, but isn't sure exactly what. Suspended from school, Winston spends time with his father, a reporter who is covering a story about a young man who is running across the country in support of cancer research--a young man named Terry Fox.
While Winston befriends Terry, his father grows impatient and short-sighted, his eye on a different and misguided goal. Winston must convince his father that despite the endless miles and pain, the journey has potential, just as he does.
In this believable blend of fact and fiction, Eric Walters portrays a compelling struggle between a son's integrity and a father's pride, as well as a glimpse into the dedication and honesty of a national champion.
Upon finishing Run, I was overwhelmed by the magnitude of Terry Fox's dream and the realization of what one person can accomplish. The collaboration of Eric Walters and the family of Terry Fox created a novel of inspiration for readers of all ages.
Eric Walters' royalties, along with a matching sum from Penguin Group Canada, will be donated to The Terry Fox Foundation. The Terry Fox Run is Sunday September 14 2008 and the Terry Fox National School Run is Friday September 26 2008. For more information please go to www.terryfoxrun.org
