Bod (Nobody) Owens was raised in a graveyard--a curious place to spend the formative years of one's life. Unless, that is, you're given life in a novel.
The Graveyard Book is scary like Gaiman's Neverwhere, but here the frights are tempered with the whimsy of Stardust, which is a good thing, as this is, after all, a book meant for younger readers. But like everything Gaiman writes, The Graveyard Book will also be enjoyed by his entire audience, which is considerable, given the many media his creativity stretches into. The Graveyard Book, like each of Neil's works, is wholly its own, and at least a portion of his audience will claim this book as "Theirs". Their favourite creation, by their favourite writer.
Each ghostly character is introduced with not only their name, but the dates of their birth and death, and an epitaph, an interesting conceit that could grow tiresome in lesser hands but never does here. And speaking of names, there's the Ghouls. Ahhh, the Ghouls. First we are introduced to the Duke of Westminster, Honourable Archibald Fitzhugh, Bishop of Bath and Wells and then later the Emperor of China and the 33rd President of the United States (it was Harry S. Truman if you're curious).
It's hard on occasion to read some of Neil's younger novels, because I am nagged by the feeling that they were not written for me. But just when I feel about to grouse over it, Neil hooks me with something so very...well, "Neil" is the only way to put it. And I smile, and think maybe this book was written for me after all.
