Night Life's Luna Wilder is a werewolf, but that hasn't stopped her from rising through police ranks to become a detective. When a serial killer strikes, Luna is on the case, and her power may be the only thing keeping a demon from destroying her home of Nocturne City.
Luna is a tough but believable heroine. In a genre where the "hard as nails" heroine is becoming as much a cliche as the damsel in distress, the author keeps her protagonist grounded and sympathetic. As an Insoli, or lone werewolf, Luna is isolated from the pack politics, but also from its security. She has her instincts, but still understands little of her dual nature. While she initially seems fine with the lot consigned to her, the more she interacts with murder suspect Dmitri--another werewolf--what has thus far been denied to her is constantly hammered home.
's fictional setting of Nocturne City comes complete with its own history, mythology, slang, and a map. While we just get a glimpse into the workings of Nocturne in this novel, it is enough to want more, especially in the case of the supernatural ghetto nicknamed Ghost Town.
Night Life is a smart, sexy read by a young writer with a lot to offer. The second novel in the series, Pure Blood, releases August 26th, and I'll be reading it when it does.
