Not your Father's Jules Verne
The movie based on 's Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a cinematic masterpiece that will not be to everyone's taste.
I was fortunate enough to attend a preview screening of the new Journey to the Center of the Earth last night. This was my first experience with Real D, the cinematic 3-D method that has been making waves for the last couple of years. Colour me impressed. I had not expected to see such lifelike clarity in a live-action 3-D movie during my lifetime.
There remain a few weaknesses. The background was a bit fuzzy, and I felt a hint of a headache that may (or may not) have been a result of wearing glasses when I don't normally. In spite of all that, the film itself was brilliant: clear, sharp and vivid, with 3-D objects popping out at me in a frightening fashion. I actually felt at times that if I reached out just a few inches, I would be able to grasp what was on the screen about 50 feet away.
The movie itself won't be for everyone. Its roots are deep in the adventure fiction tradition that was popular when Verne wrote the original. Fortunately for me, I remain a fan of the genre, and found the movie every bit as entertaining as the recent Indiana Jones. For those who hope the movie will expand your mind and make you think in new ways about the world around you, skip this one. It can only disappoint. For those looking for a couple of hours of light, fast fun, if you are able to see this in 3-D, you won't regret the effort.
