Novelists Turn to Comic Books by Chadwick Ginther - Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 7:07pm Jonathan Lethem, author of "Fortess of Solitude" and "You Don't Love Me Yet" has agreed to resurrect an obscure character known as Omega the Unknown for Marvel Comics.

"It was an interesting challenge," says Lethem. "One of the things I concluded very quickly was that it's not a written form. My primary task was to provide amazing things for artists to draw."

Omega the Unknown is a mute, the last survivor of an alien race. He has a psychic connection to twelve year old James-Michael Starling of New York. No release date has yet been announced.

Lethem joins an increasingly large cast of literary talents who are making the leap into comics. Stephen King made news recently when Marvel Comics began adapting his Dark Tower series. Best selling novelist Brad Meltzer is currently writing The Justice League of America, and authored the fantastic, if polarizing Identity Crisis. Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Chabon actually adapted the character of the Escapist from "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" into a graphic novel for Dark Horse Comics. Jodi Picoult is writing Wonder Woman, only the second woman write her in the character's sixty year history. Suspense author Greg Rucka has long been a force for DC comics.

The list continues to grow. Sherman Alexie, Charlie Huston. Even other famous creators such as Joss Whedon and Kevin Smith have written acclaimed comic book stories. Chabon's editor, Diana Schutz says "good writer's are good writers" regarding the many differences in the two mediums.
