What could be more tantalizing than a fast-paced otherworldly series about smart, hip (not to mention good-looking) teenagers with otherworldly "skills" engaging in mortal combat with dark entities?
Set in New York City, The Mortal Instruments Book 1: City of Bones introduces us to Clary and her best friend Simon, who are drawn into the strange and gothic world of the "Shadowhunters" - an elite group of non-human beings, whose purpose it is to keep order between tenuous factions of otherworldly entities. This is no small task, especially since it is the goal of Valentine, a misguided, power-hungry overlord, to control and unleash all of the dark entities.
Characters deal with real-world scenarios, which makes them interesting and complex. The romantic tension between characters adds to the mystery, requiring careful attention to dialogue. Plot twists and puzzles await the reader as Clare gradually reveals more details.
Teens who enjoy the writing of Holly Black and Tamora Pierce will love this supernatural thriller.
