Rowling Near Tears in Copyright Dispute

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was near tears while giving evidence yesterday in the copyright case being heard in front of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, according to The Guardian newspaper. Warner Brothers and Rowling want to block publication of an unauthorized Harry Potter encyclopedia by Michigan-based RDR Books.

Rowling had scathing words for Steve Vander Ark, the author of The Lexicon, calling his work "sloppy, lazy and it takes my work wholesale."

She also said her characters "meant so much to me over such a long period of time ... it's the closest thing to having a child."

The publisher's lawyer asserted Rowling and Warner Brothers had both used Vander Ark as a resource for the books and the films.
