Don't let the title fool you; this middle-reader book is not a guide to becoming a stereotypical "girly girl" at the cost of your personality - rather it sends a very positive message to young girls, whether you are girly, ungirly, or somewhere in between.
Through her two protagonists, Nick (a sporty tomboy on the basketball team) and Lindsay (a funky dresser with her own dramatic style), explores the idea of changing one's image for the sake of love. She promotes that beauty is found by being yourself rather than by conforming to a more conventional beauty, which is a refreshing change from the usual: girl undergoes a physical transformation and suddenly the boy who never noticed her before is magically attracted to her.
Thankfully, this book isn't like that at all. It's funny and realistic, showing the trials and tribulations of two intelligent girls as they struggle to fit the norm.
Not only is this a healthy read for a 9-12 year old girl, it is also highly entertaining. Nick's struggle to suppress her inner sarcastic thoughts in attempts to become more attractive are very amusing. Each chapter is also prefaced with a horoscope or quiz question, spoofing typical magazine articles, which are funny to read alongside the antics of the main characters.
