Strawberry Fields is the latest novel from the author of the enormously popular A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian.
Strawberry Fields tells the story of Irina and Andrei, who are from opposite sides of the political spectrum in the new Ukraine. Responding to the fierce call of freedom, both find themselves picking strawberries in England, along with fellow illegal refugees from China, Africa and Poland. There they struggle to grasp the slippery English language, evade manipulative con men, and build a new life that will redeem their pasts.
You will laugh at their fractured misunderstandings and cry as ruthless extortioners and human traffickers gradually lure them closer and closer to the dead-eyed life of the truly lost. Running through the story is a joyful, faithful dog that stops evil in its tracks. The overlapping voices of all the characters (including the dog) build a rich, touching narrative that will have you questioning the economic and political quagmires that divide the world.
