Tomson Highway Pens First Cree Opera

by Ryan McBride - Tuesday, Feb 19, 2008 at 10:39am

Tomson Highway, celebrated author of Kiss of the Fur Queen and plays such as Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing and Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout, has recently written what is being hailed as the first opera written in the Cree language. The opera, called The Journey or Pimooteewin, premieres in Toronto on February 15.

In an interview with CBC's Martin Morrow, Highway discusses in his inimitable style the influence of language on his imagination and the pitfalls of political correctness in First Nations playwrighting.
