The Independent UK is reporting that the judges of the CILIP Carnegie Medal for children's literature have released a list of the 10 greatest novels for children in celebration of the award's 70th anniversary. The Carnegie Medal is awarded in the U.K. by children's librarians for an outstanding book for children and young people. See the list after the jump. 10 greatest novels for children:

  • SKELLIG David Almond (won in 1998) A tale of a creature beneath the garage
  • JUNK Melvin Burgess (1996) The lives of young heroin users
  • STORM Kevin Crossley-Holland (1985) Girl discovers the secrets of a marsh
  • A GATHERING LIGHT (Canadian Title: NORTHERN LIGHTS) Jennifer Donnelly (2003) Novel about a real murder

Good idea to promote this list. However, do the follow-up - Phillip Pullman's Golden Compass was awarded the Carnegie of Carnegies. A wonderful book and for those who have not read the trilogy I would encourage them to put down Harry and find out about Lyra!
