Ruth Asks:
"I enjoy books about pioneers. I also like stories of people settling here from other countries and their tales of tribulations and success. What can you recommend?"
We have a number of great titles dealing with pioneers and settlement.
One great recent book is Sisters in Two Worlds which deals with the experiences of Susanna Moodie and Catherine Parr Traill. This book paints a vivid picture of life in the backwoods of Upper Canada in the 1830's. The double shock of pioneer life and adjusting to it as a new immigrant makes this a fascinating read. It's also a great introduction to the books they wrote about their new life in Canada. Roughing It in the Bush and The Backwoods of Canada. Both are Canadian history classics.
