Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley

by Jillian Hamilton - Thursday, Jan 17, 2008 at 9:20am

Clever, rebellious, the best archer in England, and... a girl? Robin McKinley's adaptation of Robin Hood presents a refreshingly reluctant hero who finds his opposite in the lovely Marian.

One of my favourite versions of the legend of Robin Hood, this novel presents a familiar tale with a twist: not only does Robin Hood earn the title of outlaw in a rather unglamourous and unintentional way, but his talent with a bow is far from unrivalled. It is in fact Lady Marian who excels at archery. it is also Lady Marian who first proposes that Robin begin a band of outlaws and build a base in the heart of the forrest. This novel has everything: it's humourous, imaginative, suspenseful and adventurous. I strongly recommend it to anyone who is over the age of twelve and who loves fantasy.
