The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

$21.99

This is a very dark book. It is an uncensored look at rape, slut shaming and the long term effects of sexual assault. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone sensitive to rape or animal cruelty. This book defines how, in our society, we take sexual assault as just something that happen, and how we act like it is not a big deal. All the characters have very unique perspectives, and each have their own way of coping with their feelings and what life throws at them.

This is definitely not your average YA novel. Although it still has the typical popular characters and most the things you'd expect in a YA novel, as you keep reading, you begin see the deeper meaning behind their stories. Each character has a story that you get to see a little bit into. In the end, they aren't your typical YA characters because their stories all reveal a deeper meaning.

Edgar Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a riveting contemporary YA novel that examines rape culture through alternating perspectives. A stunning, unforgettable page-turner.

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn't feel bad about it.

Three years ago, when her older sister, Anna, was murdered and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best--the language of violence.

While her own crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can't be trusted among other people. Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the night Anna's body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher's kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an animal shelter. Not anyone.

As their senior year unfolds, Alex's darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.
