Axis by Robert Charles Wilson

I can only imagine how hard it must be to follow up a Hugo Award winning novel, or as those in the genre refer to it, The Big One. It must be even harder when you are writing a direct sequel.

Wilson succeeds with Axis, and does so masterfully. While this novel is shaped from the events of Spin, and some of that novels characters do reappear, the protagonists are entirely new.

Axis is set in the world beyond the Arch. An alien landscape opened to humanity at the end of Spin by the mysterious Hypotheticals. Who are they? What are they? Why have they tampered with the evolution of our solar system. Mankind seeks answers from these cold and distant enigmas, while a young woman strives to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance.

Written with Wilson's knack for combining the big idea with wholly believable and engaging characters, Axis is a worthy successor to one of my favourite novels of 2005. Wilson has been read and praised by such giants as Stephen King and George R.R. Martin. Try for yourself and you will be doing the same.

Robert Charles Wilson will be McNally Robinson's author of the month for October 2007. Look for displays in all of our stores.
