Active Books for Active Minds

Monday, Mar 16, 2015 at 2:17pm

Look by Édouard Manceau is an oversized board book that invites young readers to play: when the book is opened, a die-cut in the middle of the book frames the world around the reader, allowing him or her to compare what they see on the page with what they see through the die-cut. Each spread presents something new to look for: numbers, letters, colours, textures, sizes, shapes and more are showcased on each individual spread.

Starting on the front cover, and winding its way across each page to the end, a single line forms different shapes that demonstrate opposites (“clean” or “messy”) in A Line Can Be… by Scandinavian artist Laura Ljungkvist. Children can follow the playful and ingenious line, which winds its way across brightly coloured and patterned pages, till it ultimately forms “you” and “me,” for a warm and charming ending.

The Game of Lines by Hervé Tullet is a brightly coloured graphic game that introduces little ones to the wonderful world of lines. Horizontal lines, vertical lines, wavy lines and criss-crossing lines make this book a playground for young hands and minds. Turn the flaps to make and mix them, and create your very own patterns!
