McNally Robinson in Saskatoon is proud to announce a book club for older teens that will explore the art and artistry of some of the greatest works in the graphic novels genre. Facilitated by McNally Robinson for Kids Bookseller Justin Pfefferle (M.A. Eng. Lit), the first session will take place on Sunday, October 21 and will look at Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
Comics are viewed as a radical medium, a form appropriate for the ideas "against the grain" of conventional thinking, and also as a crass product of commercialism - hardly worth the serious interrogations given to "literature".
As with most media, both estimations are at once true and wildly off-base. Devoted readers of comics know that comics are in no way a single entity. They encompass a wide variety of styles, qualities, ideologies, and voices.
Participants of the reading group should be prepared to sample many flavours of the rich diversity that is COMICS. Intelligent, vigorous, and even heated discussions will be welcomed and encouraged.
The Graphic Novel Book Club will meet upstairs in the Circle of Trees.
