The Return of the Body Snatchers

August 17 will mark the return to the big screen of one of science-fiction's most "durably resonant" tales, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The new film, which stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, is the fourth screen adaptation of the original 1955 novel by Jack Finney.

The first version, released in 1956 and directed by Don Siegel, was a disturbing parable of red scare hysteria, while the 1978 version, directed by Philip Kaufman, held up a mirror to our cultish fixation with psychobabble. Abel Ferrara's 1993 version, starring Forrest Whittaker, focused on the invasion's impact on the domestic sphere while squeezing in numerous references to Operation Desert Storm.

In the new film, Kidman plays a psychiatrist who realizes that something is going amiss with the people around her following the crash of a space shuttle bearing extraterrestrial spores. The remake will doubtless play on a host of present-day anxieties, including genetic engineering, terrorism, and the outbreak of pandemics.
