Cat Starr is living a normal life. Well, as normal as having an astronaut mother can be. When Cat's mother goes on a last-minute space mission, she is sent to live with her evil step-sister, Olivia, her brother, Geoffrey, her dad and her step-mother, Iz. Olivia has set out to make Cat miserable and so far, she is succeeding. Finally Cat can't take it anymore and her Great-Aunt Abyssinia comes to fix things. Well, nothing is really fixed and Cat has a bigger problem. She has started spouting toads and Olivia has started spouting diamonds and other jewels! Things get even worse when their little brother Geoffrey is kidnapped and Cat has to save him and keep Olivia safe. Can she do it?

Once Upon a Toad is a suspenseful adventure story, although it isn't as good as Heather Vogel Frederick's other series, The Mother-Daughter Book Club. This book is written well enough to make me irritated with Olivia, but not enough for me to want to stay up until midnight reading it.

There is lots of character development in this book. Olivia and Cat finally get along, and there are a handful of pretty interesting characters, like Cat's teacher, who always talks in third person, and her Great-Aunt, who wears bright orange ponchos and bright orange hair.

This book has an interesting plot and it is written well, but it didn't capture my attention like her other books.
