The Seventh and final chapter in Harry Potter’s life at Hogwarts has come and gone. Some say for the better, some for worse. Whether you will be softly sobbing at the last chance to read the story of a dear friend, or dancing happily at the hope that people can start talking about something else, all have to admit that it’s been a wild ride.
“Deathly Hallows” is a strong close to Harry’s story. J.K. Rowling’s writing has improved with previous each book, and continues here. The story is a breathless ride across the landscape of the world of Harry Potter, with as much action as any two and maybe three of the previous books combined.
It’s necessary to keep focused as you read. I spread the reading over the whole weekend and found myself having to back up a page or two several times as I slipped over a detail that quickly lead to some confusion. There’s a lot of information here and readers will need to keep their wits about them or risk a few bouts of head shaking. Lots of people on stage, lots going on, and it’s very easy to miss who ended up holding what and which way they went when they exited.
At the end, I found the story satisfying, yet somewhat incomplete. There are a few more secondary characters that I’d liked to have found out where they ended up; some detail of the background that I wish had been fleshed out; some missed opportunities to make Harry’s world even richer than it already is. All that aside, I think Ms. Rowling did a wonderful thing here, and I expect readers will continue to find Harry Potter entertaining for a long time to come.
