Hunger by Jackie Morse Kessler by Chadwick Ginther - Thursday, Dec 02, 2010 at 11:16am

Lisabeth Lewis never meant to become Famine.

When an anorexic seventeen-year-old is given the power of one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, she must face the terrible consequences of her power and the disease that threatens her life.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Jackie Kessler when her novel Black & White (Book One of the Icarus Project; co-authored with Caitlin Kittredge), was released. And I've been eagerly awaiting Hunger's release ever since.

The voice in Lisa's head, an entity she's dubbed "the Thin Voice" is as terrifying as Death, Pestilence or War. The Thin Voice is an entity that counts every calorie, reminds Lisa there are less calories in five oranges than in a glass of juice. The Thin Voice pushes her to keep losing weight, to wear baggy clothes to hide how "fat" she is. The Thin Voice has more weight than friends or family.

And it is killing Lisa.

Kessler has written a book that is terrifying, honest, and real. Despite the fantastical elements, Lisa's story is sadly common, and often ends in tragedy. Still, Hunger is not without humour. Lisa is witty and clever, with spot on observations of teen life. And for readers in a slightly older demographic, Death bears a striking resemblance to a dead rocker from the nineties.

A portion of the proceeds from Hunger will be donated to the National Eating Disorders Association.
