Fablehaven by Brandon Mull by Spencer Josef Estabrooks - Thursday, Sep 16, 2010 at 7:18pm

So, if your parents dropped you off with the grandparents you never see so they could go to the funeral of the grandparents you knew and liked would you be happy? Kendra and her brother Seth are most certainly not. Once they get to their grandparents' house, they find that Grandma is missing. Grandpa's vague explanations and strict rules cause Seth to wander onto forbidden grounds, and Kendra to investigate the mysteries she finds in the house. Soon they discover the whole estate is a preserve for magical beings - and learning when to follow the rules and when to follow your heart quickly becomes a matter of life and death.

I really enjoyed this take on the "magic is still among us" fantasy story. Kendra and Seth are both believable and sympathetic both as very different individuals and in their relationship. For a story with so many secrets, Brandon Mull does a great job of giving good reasons why characters keep things from one another, and keeps both the action and the mystery going. I have gone on to read the entire series and loved the continuing character and relationship development. As an additional incentive for fans of Percy Jackson to give this a try, Rick Riordan himself recommends it for fans of his books!
