I liked this story. I did. I just didn't really believe the main plot line.
Marcus Jordan is the new kid in town, and wanna-be quarterback of the high school football team. It's just not reasonable that it would take a smart kid like Marcus so long to figure out that his anonymous 50 year old football buddy and coach has something seriously wrong with him.
The whole town too, seems to conveniently accept that Charlie Popovich is just fine, just a little eccentric, and not suffering with what is clearly Alzheimer's Disease. Does Charlie have no peers of his own to point out to his family that he has lost control of his senses and is not safe outside the family home?
However,I always enjoy writing and I liked the other story line involving Charlie's son Troy, current quarterback and on-again, off-again suitor of Alyssa, super-hot head cheerleader who is an interesting character of her own.
I would recommend Pop to a slightly older middle grade reader who is prepared to suspend belief for the sake of a fast-paced, easy read. Pop is on the 2011 MYRCA reading list.
