All Rae Seddon, also known as Sunshine, wants is to be alone for a few hours. The Voodoo Wars have been over for years now, and there aren't any "bad spots" too near her grandmother's old cabin - it should be a perfect place for some peace and quiet away from her job at her family's cafe. But then she's captured by vampires - and when she wakes up, she's chained just feet away from one of them. Vampires in this universe aren't sexy (or sparkly) at all, yet Con the vampire and Sunshine realize that they need each other in order to survive. When Sunshine escapes, she brings Con with her; however, any chance of peace and quiet is gone. Not only are the authorities interested in her case, but the forces that chained her up with Con are still out to get them both.
As blurb on the front says, this book is "pretty much perfect." Sunshine takes place in a world much like ours, but with a slightly different history - not to mention vampires, goblins, demons and magic. The alternate world building is so well done that I felt as though there are many other stories that can be told in this world, but don't bother asking for more novels about Sunshine. As the author has noted on her blog,* there is no sequel. The ending is incredibly vague, but I don't read novels for the way they end, I read them for the journey. Which is incredible.
I end this review with two warnings. First of all, don't read on an empty stomach, or at least not in close proximity to a bakery. Sunshine is a baker, and the descriptions of delicious desserts are enough to make your mouth water and stomach rumble for some of Sunshine's cinnamon rolls. Secondly, while most of novels are written for the teen and younger set, this is most definitely an adult novel and has adult content. There isn't anything too explicit, but I would not give this to an 11-year-old fan of Twilight looking for more vampire novels.
