After pounding out numerous manuscripts over several years, I finally had one of my many stories published in an anthology, Evolve: Vampire Stories of the New Undead, and joined several other Canadian authors at the launch at the World Horror Convention in Brighton UK in March of this year. In my spare time I have been involved with a writer's workshop, a national book contest, and a few genre book reviews. I have managed to do some reading though.
Dead Until Dark and Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris (Ace and Gollance)
Looking to get into the mood for the horror convention I picked up a couple of books and enjoyed them immensely. Well written and a good read if you appreciate vampires in the Deep South and a sharp-tongued young lady protagonist.
Stolen by Kelley Armstrong (Random House)
Another in the above genre, but this time a thriller with a werewolf heroine combating evil businessmen and demons, and written by a Canadian author who was one of the contributors to Evolve. Enjoyed it!
Gaslight Grotesque edited by J.R.Campbell and Charles Prepolec (EDGE)
An anthology of Sherlock Holmes tales, with more of a dark fantasy taste blended with Victorian Mystery. You don't have to be a Sherlock fan to enjoy.
On the non fiction side I have two books currently on the go:
Iced: The Story of Organized Crime in Canada by Stephen Schneider (John Wiley and Sons)
Takes you back to the beginnings of crime in this country ... the good old days were not quite so quiet as we have been led to believe. So far so good!
A History of Canadian Culture by Johnathan F. Vance (Oxford University Press)
A look at Canada and our many art forms, beginning before the coming of the Europeans. Holding my interest.
