The Alex Awards by Alexandra Kroeger - Thursday, Apr 29, 2010 at 12:58pm

The Alex Awards, awarded by the Young Adult Library Services Association, are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.

Here are some of the winning titles that I thought looked particularly intriguing. If you like these books and are looking for more, you can check out the full list of winners or even the shortlist.

  • Soulless by Gail Carriger - Wielding a parasol and hairpins, 25-year-old soulless spinster Alexia Tarabotti accidentally stakes a vampire lacking all common etiquette to open this delightfully dangerous romp.
  • The Magicians by Levi Grossman - Fantasy and reality meld in unexpected and tragic ways when 17-year-old Quentin Coldwater trades his ho-hum Brooklyn existence for the magical society of Brakebills College.
  • The Kids are All Right by Liz Welch - This heart-wrenching memoir, collaboratively written from four different points of view, chronicles the ups and downs of the Welch siblings, who struggled to define the notion of home after their parents died.
