Dr. Emma LaRocque's Night Table Recommendations by McNally Robinson - Tuesday, Mar 16, 2010 at 11:12am As a professor I am very busy and rarely, if ever, have time to read for pleasure. But I do usually enjoy the books I read as part of my research and teaching.

Presently, I am browsing through a number of books including: Other Destinies by Louis Owens; I Thought Pocahontas was a Movie edited by Carol Schicks and James McNinch; The Colonizer's Model of the World by J.M. Blaut; 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann; One Native Life by Richard Wagamese and any poetry by Pablo Neruda or Louise Halfe.

For pure fun or relaxation I read Winnie the Pooh (I have many collections). Or the Library Lion or laugh over cat pics and sayings in cat calendars.

For music - I love music but business, such as writing under deadlines has kept me from having any time to really sit and enjoy music. I often listen to music in the car - my favorites are old fashioned blues and beautiful symphonic classics. But Baby Boomer hurtin' songs by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Roy Orbison or Georgie Jones go good with rush hour. And of course Elvis Presley. Almost any song by Andrea Bocelli is a treat. I also love Live in London by Leonard Cohen. And K.D. Lang's rendition of "Hallelujah" is simply awesome. Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" is great too. As is "Amazing Grace" by Susan Aglukark.

For TV - I love any medical shows, both fictional or real. And I really enjoy House Hunters and The Dog Whisperer.

For movies, one of my all-time favorites is A Walk in the Clouds with Keanu Reeves.
