A Tip for Grade 5/6 Writing Contest Entrants!

I have a bit of advice for any potential author who is planning on entering our Grade 5/6 Writing Contest this year. Do your research! The theme this year is animals, tame or wild. Whether you intend to write about your pet lizard or about a fictitious creature of your imagination who flies on wings of velvet - do the work, create the picture in our minds, make it real.
, the popular author of The Guardians of Ga'Hoole series has graciously agreed to be one of the judges for the writing contest, and I have just finished the advance reader's copy of her upcoming novel Hawksmaid. She has done a very thorough and well researched job with this novel and her attention to detail is marvelous.
In Hawksmaid, tells the tale of Matty, daughter of Sir William, a lord known for his skill with falcons. Matty too, develops her own skill with the falcons and comes to surpass even the talents of her father. As well as being a fascinating alternate tale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian, Hawksmaid introduces and educates the reader in the little known world of falconry. So authors, skip the details of your heroine's hair colour, and pass on the "bff" information. Focus instead on some scientific research about your subject matter, and you are more likely to get a second read from our judges! Good luck! Reminder that entries will be accepted until 11:00 pm on Friday, March 26, 2010.| Categories: Reviews |
