

, best known for his Spenser novels, passed away due to a heart attack on Monday at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He began writing the Spenser novels in 1971, and went on to write 37 novels featuring the Boston private eye. The series made the leap from page to screen by inspiring the 1980's television series Spenser: For Hire. Apart from his Detective series he wrote more then 60 titles including Westerns and YA novels.
He was named Grand Master at the Edgar awards by the Mystery Writers of America in 2002, an honor shared with earlier masters such as Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen.
