
To coincide with the release of Half-Minute Horrors (published by HarperCollins), we hereby invite you to submit your own best spooky short fiction for our Half-Minute Horrors short story contest!
How scared can you get in only 30 seconds? Dare to find out with Half-Minute Horrors, a collection of deliciously terrifying short short tales and creepy illustrations by an exceptional selection of writers and illustrators, including bestselling talents , , , , , , , , , , and many more. With royalties benefiting First Book, a not-for-profit organization that brings books to children in need, this is an anthology worth devouring. So grab a flashlight, set the timer, and get ready for instant chills!
Now it's your turn to write your own 30 second scary story. Email or drop off a spooky story that is 500 words or less. Entries will be judged by , editor of Half-Minute Horrors, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Gloria Whelan's National Book Award-winning Homeless Bird, and many other amazing books! She'll pick a winner and a runner-up in two categories: one for ages 14 and under, and one for ages 15 and up. The winning entries will then be read at our Hallowe'en Graveyard Party at our Don Mills store on the evening of October 30, 2009, and subsequently printed on our website.
The Official Half-Minute Horrors Short Story Contest rules:
1. This contest runs from October 1, 2009 through October 24, 2009. To enter, you must submit an original short story of your own creation, via e-mail to halfminhorrors@toronto.mcnallyrobinson.ca or by dropping it off in person at our Don Mills store. Please provide your name, phone number, address, and age. Only typed entries will be accepted. Email entries must be in the body of the e-mail; no attachments will be accepted. Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. on October 24, 2009. Only one entry per person.
2. Each story entry must be no longer than 500 words in length, previously unpublished, and written in English.
3. One winner and one runner-up in the Age-14-and-Under category will be chosen, and one winner and one runner-up in the Age-15-and-Up category will be chosen.
4. The winning and runners-up short stories will be read aloud at our Graveyard Party on October 30th. The winning and runners-up short stories will also be published online on our website, www.mcnallyrobinson.com. Winners and runners-up will also receive McNally Robinson gift cards.
5. Winners will be chosen by Susan Rich, whose decisions are final on all matters related to this contest. McNally Robinson Booksellers is not responsible for lost, interrupted, garbled or jumbled entries or transmissions, or unavailable network, server, or other connections, or other errors of any kind, whether human, mechanical or electronic. Please note that entries will not be acknowledged or returned, so please keep a copy of your work.
6. This contest is open to residents of Canada only.
7. By entering, entrants agree to abide by these contest rules and the decisions of the contest judge and McNally Robinson Booksellers.
8. The winners and runners-up in each category will be notified by phone on or about October 30, 2009.
9. McNally Robinson Booksellers reserves the right to use the winners' and runners-up's full names for promotional purposes in all forms of media without notice, review, approval, or compensation. By entering, the winners and runners-up agree to the publication of their entries on McNally Robinson's website (www.mcnallyrobinson.com) without any approval or compensation.
