It is only after young girls have started going missing that D.I. Pete Caldecott and Crow Mage Jack Winter meet again after years apart. Pete, now a grown woman, still has nightmares of the night in the graveyard when she watched Jack die. Jack, meanwhile, has spent the intervening years drugging himself into oblivion, hoping to block out the voices and darkness his powers have opened him up to. In a departure from her Nocturne City series featuring werewolf detective Luna Wilder, has crafted a brilliant debut to her new ongoing series Black London.
Despite the novel's shadowy villains, at many times D.I. Pete Caldecott and Crow Mage Jack Winter are their own worst enemies. A crackling chemistry exists between the two leads that makes it hard to believe this is a work of fiction. Kittredge displays a keen ear for not only dialogue but dialect: both protagonists sound and feel authentically British, yet neither speak identically. The author clearly did her research when it came to writing the slang and speech patterns of the U.K.
Street Magic is a great, creepy read that takes readers through the black and hidden parts of London. It reminded me of reading 's Neverwhere for the first time. The author has claimed on her website that she feels this is her best work to date. She's right, and that's saying something.
