David Eddings Dead at 77 by Chadwick Ginther - Sunday, Jun 07, 2009 at 5:09pm

David Eddings, best known for his enduringly popular fantasy series The Belgariad, The Mallorean, The Elenium and Tamuli, passed away June 2nd at the age of 77. The author was predeceased by his wife and co-author Leigh in 2007.

It has been many years since I have read The Belgariad and all that came after. When I discovered the series in the library at the wise age of eleven it became a work that I read and re-read, repeatedly (indeed, at one point, my local librarian asked me to PLEASE stop reading it, so that some other boy could have a turn). I remember the anticipation with which I waited for the Seeress of Kell to be released so that I could learn how the story of farm-boy Garion finally ended. That novel was one of the first that I remember purchasing in hardcover, not being able to wait a year for the paperback edition.

Reading tastes grow and change with time, but having encountered David Eddings at just the right time in my life, I was left with an enduring love of the fantasy genre. My condolences to his friends, family, and fans. He will be missed.
