FlashForward coming to TV this fall. by Kent Pollard - Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 10:53am

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and TV Guide , ABC has ordered 13 episodes of a new series based on Robert J. Sawyer's FlashForward.

The Nebula Award winning FlashForward used the opening experiments of a Large Hadron Collider to justify a worldwide glimpse into the future. The book provided a solid look at the differences between theories of predestination versus free will, and delivers some interesting insights into how the conflict might effect a variety of people.

While the TV series will need to diverge significantly from the concepts contained in a single book, it is sure to be interesting. The fact that network ABC has pre-ordered thirteen episodes, rather than the usual six, is a significant hint that they expect it to do well. It also ensures that for those who do get caught up in the story, there will be enough footage to make for an interesting DVD product later in the event that the series doesn't make it.

FlashForward the series has several key things going for it. In the starring role, Joseph Fiennes of Shakespeare in Love is a talented actor. Also on the acting list, John Cho will provide a nice connection to the just released Star Trek prequel movie. David Goyer (who co-wrote the pilot and directs the series) has a long list of successful genre projects and is likely to bring with him a strong following of genre fans. In addition, coming, as it will, right in the middle of Robert J. Sawyer's new Webmind trilogy Of which the first book Wake is out now) which studies the rise of consciousness within the internet, the portents are good for a successful run.
