Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You by James Cameron
Thursday, Jul 05, 2007 at 12:46pmHaving read some of Cameron's adult lit, I was interested to see how he would deal with a YA character. As it turns out, he did an excellent job.
The book chronicles the summer after eighteen-year-old James Sveck's graduation from high school. He's been accepted to Brown University but doesn't want to go. He is hopelessly attracted to a male co-worker at his mother's art gallery, but has never stopped to think about whether he's gay or straight. In fact, he hasn't really stopped to think about a lot of things, including how sad and lonely he is, until his (very loopy) divorced parents send him to a psychologist. It may sound like there's a lot of drama going on, but it's actually a very touching, subtle novel. James is intensely sarcastic and too smart for his own good, but he still manages to be loveable, rather than insufferable.
