Tea Time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith by Nicole Berard - Thursday, Apr 23, 2009 at 6:28pm

Tea Time for the Traditionally built transports us back to Mma Ramotswe's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency on Tlokweng Road in Gaborone, Botswana for the 10th installment of Alexander McCall Smith's bestselling series. Despite the exotic locale, reading Tea Time for the Traditionally Built is like returning to a fondly remembered vacation spot because Mma Ramotswe's Gaborone is peopled with characters whose emotions and motivations are completely relatable.

In this installment Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are once again confronted with a series of mysteries that gently reveal commonalities in the corners of human experience. This time Mma Ramotswe has been tasked to discover why the Kalahari Swoopers Football team keeps losing their matches all while trying to hide the increasingly disturbing noises her tiny white van is making from her husband, Mr. JLB Matekoni, one of Botswana?s most trusted mechanics. In the meantime, Violet Sephotho, Mma Makutsi's longtime rival, has gotten a job at the Double Comfort Furniture store and set her sights on Phuti Radiphuti, Mma Makutsi's fiancé. The solutions to these problems have a gentle humour and remarkable insight that leaves you emotionally satisfied.

Fans of the series will not be disappointed by Tea Time for the Traditionally Built and people new to Alexander McCall Smith's corner of Botswana will quickly become fans of his lyrical writing and beautifully drawn world. Tea Time for the Traditionally Built is a fitting addition to this charming series.
