I'm in love with a vampire...and his name isn't Edward. by Tracy Howard - Thursday, Mar 26, 2009 at 12:44pm

Vampire romances are the most popular novels on our shelves these days, and the vampires all seem to be beautiful - a far cry from the original scary creatures of folk tales. In keeping with this new take on an old genre, Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey stands out for me for several reasons.

The novel doesn't take itself too seriously for one thing. There is excellent character development and the plot moves along at a quick pace. It has well-written dialogue, a spark of real chemistry between the two main characters, and even a romantic dance scene.

In Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, Lucius Vladescu (what a great name!) arrives in small-town America posing as a foreign exchange student from Romania so that he can locate and woo his betrothed princess bride. Unfortunately for Lucius, the object of his affection has no knowledge of or interest in her arranged marriage, nor any understanding of its importance in uniting warring legions of vampires in far-off Romania. In addition to being incredibly hot, Lucius has a fine sense of humour (unlike certain other popular vampires who seem unable to laugh - small dig!) that manages to convey his confusion with the American lifestyle he has been forced to accept while still poking fun at it.

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side could easily have been written without the connection to the vampire world, but it certainly benefits from it - if only to serve as enticement to those readers eager for more of the genre that can do no wrong these days.

The undead can really screw up your senior year . . . Marrying a vampire definitely doesn't fit into Jessica Packwoods senior year get-a-life plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot)...
