Winnipeg’s oldest free-for-all storytelling group is coming to McNally’s. Come and taste the soup, or add an ingredient of your own. Whatever you bring will make a more delicious soup. There will be an experienced teller/host each night to help us get cooking.
Your host for this evening is Laurie Cowley, who will be telling stories from India. Kay Stone, Ehsan Shams, and Mary Louise Chown will also be on hand to stir the pot.

Live Music
Baroque Classical
Jan Freihammer plays a variety of wooden recorders (tenor, alto, soprano and sopranino) and specializes in music of the baroque period. He also enjoys playing jazz and ragtime. He is also a pianist and continues to study piano, recorder and voice.
Kevin Scott is a multi-instrumentalist, having experience with piano, guitar, harpsichord, concertina, recorder, mandolin and dulcimer. Having worked with eveything from rock bands to string quartets, his interests range from early music to British folk to rock and classical music.
Jan and Kevin bring the refined and stately sound of the music of the baroque period to Prairie Ink, transporting the listener to a different age. This is music that works as well in the background as it does in the foreground, so feel free to sit, talk, eat and drink - or simply drift away on the music!
F.E.R.N -- Live Musical Performance

Event type: Musical Performance
Rather than confusing people by her last name, Rachel Fowlie-Neufeld uses FERN as a "clever" moniker for her foray onto Saskatoon's folk music scene. With encouragement from friends and members of the Ray Whitton band, she has been showcasing a mix of originals and covers at coffee shop gigs and open mic nights for the past year and a half.
Sometimes solo, sometimes accompanied by viola (Michael Peterson), FERN is slowly building an audience around town. Perhaps these musical shenanigans have been encouraged by a disproportionate caffeine:blood ratio, but have nevertheless led to a love of exploring and performing music. An EP is in the works for 2012.

Launch of People’s Citizenship Guide: A Response to Conservative Canada (ARP).
In 2009, Stephen Harper’s Conservative government changed the contents of the official citizenship guide that is given to all recent immigrants. The new version contained a lot more military history and plenty of information about the monarchy, but little about public programs such as medicare or education, or our rich history of social justice movements. Ignoring the work and democratic struggles of generations of newcomers, it presumes that new immigrants need to be taught how to “take responsibility” for their families. In short, the official guide outlines an exceptionally narrow, conservative view of Canadian politics and society. In People’s Citizenship Guide, a group of progressive scholars offer an alternative citizenship guide: a lively, political, humane—and more honest—alternative to Stephen Harper’s version of the story.
Esyllt Jones studies the history of health, disease, and social movements, and is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Manitoba. Author of Influenza 1918: Disease, Death and Struggle in Winnipeg, she is also a member of the ARP editorial collective.
Adele Perry is Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in the Department of History, University of Manitoba. She is the author of On the Edge of Empire, a co-editor of Rethinking Canada: The Promise of Women’s History, and is working on a book length study of an elite Creole/Metis family and circuits of migration and rule in the nineteenth-century British empire.
Also speaking this evening is contributor Debra Parkes, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba, with more speakers to be announced.
This event is co-sponsored by the Centre for Human Rights Research Initiative at the University of Manitoba.

A Naturopathic Perspective on...Supplements

In an ideal world we would be able to obtain all our nutritional needs through the foods we consume. Unfortunately due to factors like soil depletion and contamination it is getting increasingly more difficult to achieve this. As a result, in an effort to take a more active role in self care a larger portion on the population are turning to supplements.
Despite this attention it is still hard to separate fact from folklore due to the large number of anecdotal, second hand information compounded with frequent conflicting messages from the media.
Join Dr. Andrew Bryk, N.D. for an evening chat that will cover:
- what supplements are and why are they needed
- forms and dosing – does it make a difference?
- safety issues – interactions and purity
- issues with labeling
