I stand corrected... by Catherine Toews - Saturday, Aug 04, 2007 at 4:04pm

'Gossip Girl' series is not that bad after all

Although my teenage years are behind me, I read an awful lot of teen literature. Granted, it's an important component of my job, but that's not the only reason why I read it. There's a wealth of great writing out there aimed at teenagers and young adults. Just like all the other novels in our store, some teen novels are better than others. Some are good, and some are bad.

Up until last week, Cecily Von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl series had been relegated to the "bad" column in my mind...

Hey teenagers - do you like to read? by Catherine Toews - Tuesday, Jul 10, 2007 at 10:54am

British conference explores "adolescents' aversion to books"

Apparently, teenagers don't like to read. Apparently, this is becoming a problem. Apparently, this problem is big enough that it is prompting some very official conversations amongst educators and publishers.

Perhaps my perspective has been skewed by working in a bookstore, but I seem to know a large number of teenagers who love reading.

Ryan Gosling to star in film adaptation of The Lovely Bones by Catherine Toews - Friday, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:21pm

Canuck actor joins Rachel Weisz in Peter Jackson production

Ryan Gosling, star of the '90s cable television series Breaker High (also known for his perhaps more well-respected, Oscar-nominated performance in 2006's Half Nelson) is set to star alongside Rachel Weisz in the film adaptation of Alice Sebold's best-selling novel The Lovely Bones. The film, which is being spearheaded by Mr. Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson, will feature Gosling and Weisz as the parents of the story's (deceased) 14-year-old female protagonist. Here's hoping that the movie turns out to be at least 88% as good as the novel. I trust Mr. Gosling, though. I do. I've loved him since he went to high school on a boat.

Harry Potter Successor Found by Ryan McBride - Tuesday, Jun 12, 2007 at 1:25pm

Barry Cunningham, the Bloomsbury editor who first saw the potential in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, claims to have struck gold a second time with Tunnels, a young adult novel about a boy archaeologist who finds himself drawn into a world of adventure after digging a hole.

"I knew from page one that Harry Potter was magic," says Cunningham. "Reading Tunnels gave me the same thrill, discovering a world of imagination just beyond our ordinary lives."

Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams, the author of the book, originally self-published an edition of the novel that apparently sold out within hours of hitting the bookshelves. No word yet on when it will be released in North America.
