Books I Am Anxiously Awaiting

by Alexandra Kroeger - Monday, Jul 12, 2010 at 1:55pm

One of the frustrating things about being a bibliophile is that it's SO HARD to wait for those books that haven't been released yet. They look SO interesting and you know that you'll love them - but you can't read them yet because nobody can.

Misery loves company, so here are a couple of titles that I can't wait for. Maybe other people will be wretchedly excited with me!

Bloody Jack Week at the Page Flipper

I know very few people who love the Bloody Jack series as much as I do, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that Chelsea at the Page Flipper has devoted a whole week of posts to Jacky and her mad adventures (this doesn't have anything to do with books, but if you're a Buffy fan, the week before Bloody Jack week was Buffy week!). She covers the awesomeness of pirates, why Clarissa Worthington Howe isn't all that bad, the time period, and the general wonderfulness of the series.

It's hard for me to pinpoint one favourite thing about the series. Jacky has wild adventures like nobody's business, making the books so much fun to read. She's not even limited by location - she buckles serious swash whether by land or by sea. So much swashbuckling could get very unrealistic and unbelievable in the hands of a lesser author, but L.A. Meyer makes it work well with capable writing and lots of humour.

If you haven't read the Bloody Jack books, you should. If you have read them, what's your favourite thing about the series?

The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan - It's Here!

by Alexandra Kroeger - Friday, Apr 30, 2010 at 1:49pm

If you're a Percy Jackson fan, you've probably heard that the first book in Rick Riordan's new series The Kane Chronicles, The Red Pyramid, is coming out today, Tuesday, May 4 - and if you're anything like us at the bookstore, you can't wait to read it either! Instead of featuring Greek mythology, this series is about Egyptian gods and goddesses. It all starts when Carter and Sadie Kane's father blows up the British museum...

To celebrate the release, I interviewed my co-worker Josef to see what he thinks about this exciting new series.

New and Exciting (and sometimes strange) things that pop up in the world of publishing

by McNally Robinson - Saturday, Mar 20, 2010 at 1:28pm

First - Captain Underpants is coming back! The long-awaited tenth book in the series, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen From the Future, will be coming out sometime later this year. Author Dav Pilkey is contracted for three more Captain Underpants books after this one. Woohoo!

Secondly, and kind of oddly, singer/actress Hilary Duff of Lizzie McGuire fame is... writing a novel? She recently signed a multiple-book contract with Simon and Schuster for a Young Adult Series. The first book, Elixir, will be published in the fall of this year. According to this website, the new series "will focus on a photojournalist named Clea Raymond, the celebrity offspring of a politician and a doctor. In Da Vinci Code fashion, she chases a dashing boy in a race against time to unravel a centuries-old mystery that could unlock the key to her soulmate's true identity." Huh.

And to round out this list, a recommendation for a book that you might not have heard of: Neil Flambé and the Marco Polo Murders, by Canadian author Kevin Sylvester. According to the CM review:

The top chefs of Vancouver's classier restaurants are dying, killed by some unidentifiable poison that leaves them with their faces blue but their lips smiling. The chief of police calls in his expert: The Nose, aka 14-year-old Neil Flambé, chef, restauranteur, sniffer extraordinary, and, incidentally, school boy.
Looks interesting!
