Write and illustrate your own 10-15 page graphic novel, with original characters, story, and artwork. Content must be appropriate for ages 10-14.

The contest is open to anyone ages 10-14.

Submission deadline is August 9, 2008. 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place winners will be contacted August 16. All submissions must be left at the Kids Desk in an envelope marked with the author/illustrator’s name, age, address, phone number, and parent’s name.

Submissions may be retrieved after August 16, 2008.

Shannara, the Graphic Novel

Terry Brooks' long-running fantasy series is set to expand into new media. A multi-picture movie deal was announced recently, and then on March 25 Del Rey released the original graphic novel Dark Wraith of Shannara.

Over at the comic news website Newsarama, you will find interviews with Brooks, Robert Napton (who adapted Brooks' story), and artist Edwin David.


David Fincher to Direct Black Hole

David Fincher, acclaimed director of among other films, Fight Club and Zodiac has been attached to direct the live action movie based on Charles Burns' Harvey Award winning graphic novel Black Hole.

Originally serialized over ten years by Kitchen Sink Press and then Fantagraphics Books, Black Hole was finally collected in hardcover and now trade paperback by Pantheon Books.

Black Hole features a group of suburban Seattle teens in the 1970's who catch The Bug, an STD that causes physical mutations, some subtle, some grotesque. The alienated teens face prejudice and exile.
