The Demon World by Sally Green (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Sunday, Feb 09, 2020 at 1:31pm

King Aloysius has discovered the power of demons’ smoke. It can make a child faster and stronger than the most fit solider. With his power hungry ways, he plans to make an army like no other, an army of children. There are few who can stop him, Princess Cathrine, Ambrose, Tash, Edyon, and March. Coming from all walks of life, they must come together, go through the demon tunnels, thwart politicians and assassins, and stop King Aloysius plans before it is to late. I would rate this book a 2/5 because there is way to much love, sex, politics, and all the stuff I don’t like in a good fantasy book.

Season of the Witch by Sarah Rees Brennan (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Monday, Feb 03, 2020 at 7:50pm

$12.99

It's the summer before her sixteenth birthday, and Sabrina Spellman knows her world is about to change. She's always studied magic and spells with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda. But she's also lived a normal mortal life -- attending Baxter High, hanging out with her friends Susie and Roz, and going to the movies with her boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle. Now time is running out on her everyday, normal world, and leaving behind Roz and Susie and Harvey is a lot harder than she thought it would be. Especially because Sabrina isn't sure how Harvey feels about her. Her cousin Ambrose suggests performing a spell to discover Harvey's true feelings. But when a mysterious wood spirit interferes, the spell backfires... in a big way.Sabrina has always been attracted to the power of being a witch. But now she can't help wondering if that power is leading her down the wrong path. Will she choose to forsake the path of light and follow the path of night?

I did not finish reading Season of the Witch because it is too scary. Sabrina is a kid witch, who uses spells in ways that she shouldn't. I picked it because I thought it looked really interesting. Later on I saw inside the cover that it is for kids 12+, I am 10. So older kids might like the book better than I did. I would only recommend reading this book if you are a teenager.

Songs From the Deep by Kelly Powell (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Saturday, Feb 01, 2020 at 5:51pm

$25.99

Moira Alexander has always been fascinated by the deadly sirens who lurk along the shores of her island town. Even though their haunting songs can lure anyone to a swift and watery grave, she gets as close to them as she can, playing her violin on the edge of the enchanted sea. When a young boy is found dead on the beach, the islanders assume that he's one of the sirens' victims. Moira isn't so sure. Certain that someone has framed the boy's death as a siren attack, Moira convinces her childhood friend, the lighthouse keeper Jude Osric, to help her find the real killer, rekindling their friendship in the process. With townspeople itching to hunt the sirens down, and their own secrets threatening to unravel their fragile new alliance, Moira and Jude must race against time to stop the killer before it's too late--for humans and sirens alike.

Even though Songs from the Deep claims it is a book about sirens this book is really more about humans. This book is heavy on the drama and more a mystery than a fantasy as sirens don't play a major role. The story's setting is a small island and is vaguely old-timey. There is a bit of a romance but it does not takeover the story as it does in some books. The plot hooks you right at the start but then it kind of drags for a bit. The mystery element could have been better as it's more pure luck that cracks the case rather than the main character's detective skills. Overall, I yhought it was a fairly good book, my main complaint being that there weren't enough sirens. I give this book 3.5/5 stars.

Fake by Donna Cooner (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Sunday, Jan 26, 2020 at 12:49pm

$11.99

Maisie Fernandez is fed up. Fed up with the bullies who taunt her about her size and her looks. Fed up with being the butt of everyone's jokes. So, one night, Maisie goes online and creates a fake profile. "Sienna" is beautiful, skinny, and confident -- and soon she's messaging the most popular kids in Maisie's school. Maisie doesn't care about being friends with them. She wants to use Sienna to take them down. But as Maisie's web of deception grows, she's in danger of being exposed. And what will happen when the actual Sienna -- the girl whose photos Maisie has been using -- shows up in real life?

Fake was an incredible book and I plan on re-reading it many times. This book was very hard to put down and I was constantly wondering what would happen next. The characters really showed that you may think you know everything about someone, but there is so much more beneath the surface. I also really enjoyed this book because the characters were always growing along with the story. I would recommend this to people 12 and up.
