Sunburst Finalists Announced by Chadwick Ginther - Sunday, Jul 04, 2010 at 5:00pm

The Sunburst Award, named for author Phyllis Gotlieb's first novel, is a juried prize celebrating Canadian literature of the fantastic. It has both an adult and young adult category.

The winners of the Sunburst Award will be announced Fall 2010. Jurors for 2010 are Don Bassingthwaite, Gemma Files, Susie Moloney, Ursula Pflug, and Edward Willett.

The Windup Girl Wins Best Novel at the Nebula Awards by Chadwick Ginther - Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 1:35pm

Paolo Bacigalupi's debut novel, The Windup Girl, has won big at the 2010 Nebula Awards. The Nebulas, presented by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America are considered to be one of the "big three" awards in the science fiction and fantasy field. The Windup Girl is also shortlisted for Best Novel at the Hugo Awards.

The shortlist for the 2010 Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Awards have been announced!

The two awards, worth $6,000 each, honour the best in writing and illustration in Canadian children's literature.

The nominees in the children's picture book category are:

  • Perfect Snow by Barbara Reid
  • When Stella was Very, Very Small by Marie-Louise Gay
  • Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion by Jane Barclay
  • Scaredy Squirrel at Night by Melanie Watt
  • The Imaginary Garden by Andrew Larsen

The nominees in the young adult/middle reader category are:

  • Vanishing Girl by Shane Peacock
  • The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy by Jill MacLean
  • earthgirl by Jennifer Cowan
  • The Mealworm Diaries by Anna Kerz
  • The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

Last year's winners were Chester's Back! by Melanie Watt in the children's picture book category, and in the young adult/middle reader category the winner was Libertad by Alma Fullerton.
