Nebula Award Nominees Announced

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) has announced their shortlists in all categories for the Nebula Awards. The Nebula Awards are voted on by active members of the SFWA, and are considered one of the "big three" awards for the genre, alongside the Hugos and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. Winners will be announced May 15th.

Prix Aurora Award Nominations Are Open

The Prix Aurora Awards, Canada's highest honour in the field of speculative fiction, are now accepting nominations for all categories. To nominate, you must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. The ballot will remain open until February 15th. You can find a partial list of eligible titles here for works in English, and here for works in French.

Some eligible titles that have been reviewed by McNally Robinson include: Indigo Springs by A.M. Dellamonica, Warden of Greyrock by K.V. Johansen, The King's Daughters by Nathalie Mallet, Wake by Robert J. Sawyer, Steel Whispers by Hayden Trenholm, and The World More Full of Weeping by Robert J. Wiersema.

Not reviewed on this site, but still excellent reads and deserving books are Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong, Terra Insegura by Edward Willett and Julian Comstock by Robert Charles Wilson.

This year, Winnipeg's annual science fiction and fantasy convention, Keycon will be hosting the Aurora Awards.

Gargoyle and Little Brother Victorious at Sunburst Awards

Congratulations to Winnipeg's Andrew Davidson, whose debut novel The Gargoyle has won the 2009 Sunburst Award in the adult category. The Sunburst has also recently begun to honour books for young adults. This year the award went to Cory Doctorow's Little Brother.

The Sunburst Award is named after a novel by Phyllis Gotlieb. Gotlieb, who passed away earlier this year, was among the first Canadian authors to publish in the speculative fiction field.
