Say You Will by Eric Walters (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Monday, May 18, 2015 at 1:26pm

$14.95

Say You Will focuses on Sam, the most intelligent person you will ever meet. Sam wants to fit in in his highschool and the most popular thing going around the school is promposals -- a dramatic event in which someone is asked to the prom in public. Sam plans to host a promposal with the help of his two best friends, Ian and Brooke, but will the girl of his dreams reject him in front of hundereds of people?

Say You Will was an overall good book with an excellent, satisfactory ending. I recommend it for those who are into romance, or short, quaint novels. The author, Eric Walters, has also written many other fantastic books such as We All Fall Down or Alexandria of Africa.

The Cage by Megan Shepherd (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

The Cage

$21.99

Sometimes mistakes are worth making.

The Cage is one of my most anticipated books of 2015 and the synopsis had me needing the book within seconds of reading it. That, and of course the gorgeous cover. My need for this book was unreal. This book definitely has a major science fiction feel to it and it would be the perfect book for people who enjoy the genre, but also fans of space and advanced technology.

You can connect with the characters in The Cage in many ways because each character is completely different in their own ways. Between the senator's daughter, the army boy, the model, the genius, and the illegal trader, you can find a bit of yourself in all of them. The concept of characters being captured and help captive in a human zoo was also a new and exciting idea. For The Cage however, I found that it really couldn't be considered a zoo but rather a lab with scientists doing experiments on the captives in their cages.

The way the "aliens" are built and described as beautifully creepy was definitely one my favourite parts of the book. They are tall, have unnatural colours, and their eyes--oh goodness. They were close to human-looking so it was easy to picture them alongside the human characters. A lot of alien books tend to make the aliens too human-looking so I'm glad it wasn't that way with The Cage.

I really enjoyed The Cage and I look forward to see what everyone else thinks of it! The wait is officially on for the sequel!

The Cage will be available on May 26th.

From Above, So Below

Friday, May 08, 2015 at 3:21pm

Humanity is tested to the breaking point when faced with sudden alien invasion in these tremendous YA sci-fi standouts.

In the newly released novel, Undertow by Michael Buckley, the invaders come not from the sky, but from the sea. Three years ago, the world changed forever when the Alpha arrived on Coney Island beach. Once a proud race of ocean-based warriors, they are now little more than refugees seeking asylum. Awe at their sudden appearance soon turns to fear, then paranoia, and finally violence. Caught in between is Lyric Walker, who has her own family to protect. When the US government begins assimilating some of the young Alpha into Lyric’s high school, tensions between the Alpha and the human-race come to a head in this excellent first book in an exciting new sci-fi series.

In The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, now available in a pocketbook edition, the invaders were already here when the invasion began. After the first wave, the world was plunged into darkness. After the second, only the lucky escaped. After the third, only the unlucky survived. After the fourth wave, everyone else is the enemy. Now begins the fifth wave, and for those remaining, the world is a dangerous place. On her own, and haunted by the memories of her life before, Cassie searches for her lost brother. Further away, a boy known only as Zombie is recruited into the last military-run operation in an attempt to save humanity. And far out in the wild, a Hunter begins to question his mission.

Excerpt from the May/June issue of The Bookseller, out now.

Swept Away by Michelle Dalton (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Monday, May 04, 2015 at 12:54pm

$12.99

Swept Away by Michelle Dalton is an easy summer romance read that follows Mandy and Oliver along their journey. It is heart-warming and left me feeling satisfied after reading it. Mandy is stuck watching the town lighthouse for the summer while her best friend and brother are out living their lives. She thinks this summer is going to be a bummer, until she meets the very cute visiting grandson of "freaky Framingham", Oliver. She loves the countless days she gets to spend with Oliver, but summer only lasts two months. What will happen once their time is finally up?

This book was, for me, quite fulfilling and a nice easy read. I liked that it wasn't just one of those cheesy teen romance books, but instead had a lot of character development and build-up for Mandy. Of course, that came along with the nice romantic storyline. I loved the way the two main characters connected. It wasn't like they shared all the same interests--they had many differences--but that's what made this story so much more entertaining. Dalton really knows how to draw readers right from the start and keep them intrigued till the end. The author has many other books that I believe I will now have to pick up. All in all, I would rate this book an 8 out of 10 stars.
