Carols and Chaos by Cindy Anstey (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Sunday, Oct 20, 2019 at 3:43pm

Meet Kate Darby and Matt Harlow. They both work at an estate called Shackleford Park. There, Kate acts as a lady’s maid and Matt as valet for two brothers. As it is nearly Christmas, they are both busy with their regular chores and holiday preparations, on top of other things. They are also in love. Suddenly, among the hustle and bustle of their love and the holidays, they are dragged into the danger of a counterfeiting scheme. What will happen to Matt and Kate?

I found Carols & Chaos pretty uninteresting and hard to get into. So, because of this I give it two out of five stars.

In the Woods by Carrie Jones and Steven E. Wedel (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Monday, Oct 14, 2019 at 4:29pm

Chrystal is your average teenaged girl; she has a tiny tattoo, has late night phone calls or stays out too late on the phone. She is extremely disappointed when she learns she cannot accompany her mother and go to New York for the summer as planned. Instead she joins her crypto-geologist father as he heads off to Oklahoma to study a suggested Bigfoot sighting and the disappearances of animals and there strange deaths. Upon arriving, Chrystal and her father meet with the boy who saw “Bigfoot” and his family. The 2 family’s join together to solve to unsettling events that have been disrupting their small town, such as the sudden and frequent disappearances of young women. Only, things change when the beast comes after Chrystal, only to fail but keep trying. Once it is clear that Chrystal is the beats main target, the family sets trap after trap and try’s to find out as much as possible about the beast and find interesting facts about Chrystal’s past. And When all is over Chrystal makes the decision to stay with her newly adopted farm family and her newly found boyfriend and happily settles for country girl instead of city girl.

In the woods is one of the most intriguing books I have ever read. I have always thought that words in a page could not give you chills until I read this book. It leaves you wanting more and on edge as the mysteries of this brilliant book unravel.

Rated by Melissa Grey (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Societies thrive on order, and the Rating System is the ultimate symbol of organized social mobility. The higher it soars, the more valued you are. The lower it plummets, the harder you must work to improve yourself. For the students at the prestigious Maplethorpe Academy, every single thing they do is reflected in their ratings, updated daily and available for all to see.But when an act of vandalism sullies the front doors of the school, it sets off a chain reaction that will shake the lives of six special students -- and the world beyond.

With witty humor and lots of twists, I found Rated to be an excellent book. My favorite character was probably Tamsin, a funny and interesting girl. In my opinion I think that l would have a score of 70, although it might be lower. I found that at the start of the book I thought that the system was a great idea, but now that l have finished the book I am not so sure.

The book gives you a whole different perspective of everything you do and think. I think that the funniest part was probably when they created the chat group. I very much liked the author and I will definitely read more of her books. Hopefully I convinced you to read this book. You will not regret it!

The Language of Fire by Stephanie Hemphill (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

$21.99

Joan of Arc has been a fascinating figure for many centuries for many people. There's not many known of her as a person, what we know of her is claim to be chosen by God, her subsequent role during the 100 years war and her eventual death. Many fascination rests on the fact she was a simple farmer's daughter, whose role and place were defined strictly at her time, and yet she managed to lead an army towards victory.

The Language of Fire offers an insight through Joan's mind from her childhood to her death. Unfortunately, it felt monotonous in many places. It is written in verse, so many aspects are skipped and not explained in detail. I love the reflection on the role of women. Also how she was hated because she was a girl and didn't fit the role she was supposed to be. I think verses are a great medium for this. But to tell her story as a whole, of her experiences and battles instead of her thoughts. This writing style just doesn't fit and removes a lot from the reading experience.

Shatter City by Scott Westerfeld (from a Two Thumbs Up reviewer)

Friday, Oct 04, 2019 at 2:29pm

$23.99

Frey was raised to protect her sister, impersonate her if she died. But everything changes when she meets Col, the heir of a fallen city. Rafi, Frey’s sister, runs off with rebels to destroy their father. But Frey stays pretending to be Rafi, saving the boy she loves, and overthrowing her
father.

I would rate Shatter City the sequel to Impostors a 4.87/5 stars. I would recommend it to people who like science fiction and dystopian novels.
