Grade 5/6 Writing Contest - Destinies

by Shanleigh K - Monday, Mar 07, 2016 at 3:53pm

McNally Robinson Booksellers and Scholastic Canada invite Manitoba’s grade 5 and 6 students to enter our annual writing contest. This year the theme is DESTINIES — what will happen, what was meant to be, and how it did (or did not) come to pass. Is the future already written or can it be shaped? If you could change your destiny, would you?

We are excited to announce that this year’s special guest judge is Tui T. Sutherland, author of the New York Times bestselling Wings of Fire series. The winning author receives a $75.00 McNally Robinson gift card and the winner’s school receives a selection of books by Tui T. Sutherland.

Entries will be accepted in-store or via email until 10:00 pm on Thursday March 24, 2016. Winners will be announced on Monday April 18. For more information, click here, or call:

VOYAGES - Saskatoon Writing Contest Winners

by Allison Currie - Friday, May 01, 2015 at 1:32pm

Congratulations to the award-winning author's of this year's Grade 5/6 VOYAGES Writing Contest! We all had a wonderful time at the awards gala last night as the winning stories were read aloud, and prizes were provided through the generosity of Scholastic Canada.

Felicitations to all those who entered and a big thank you to Jennifer A. Nielsen for her comments and encouragement!

First Place: Jaqlyn G. Ai

"Wow - I did not expect that twist ending, very cool! I especially love the way you used time in that story, of how you make me constantly worried that the time is going to run out at any second." - Jennifer A. Nielsen

Second Place: Ozayr Raazi

"This was a very exciting story. It felt a little like a Lord of the Rings style of story, right on that epic fantasy level, and it was interesting that it all turned out to be a dream." - Jennifer A. Nielsen

Third Place: Katherine Chang

"This feels like a great start to a wonderful story. Stories set in the future can be tricky because you have to consider what about the world will change and what will be the same at that time. I thought you did a great job with that - with the hover truck and digital readers, but also a suitcase that zips shut too. I wish there were more of this story I could read!" - Jennifer A. Nielsen

Honourable Mentions: Sophie Rock, Brett Stoura, and Kaylee Turgeon
