A Review of Warden of Greyrock by K. V. Johansen by Joan Marshall - Tuesday, Apr 14, 2009 at 7:37pm

Warden of Greyrock by K.V. Johansen is the third book of the Warlocks of Talverdin series.

In this continuation of the rich, complex fantasy epic, the evil Prince Alberick ruthlessly plots to annihilate the warlocks and the half humans whose lack of pure blood disgusts him. King Dugald, Queen Eleanor and the loyal Maurey, the new Warden of Greylock, must stay one step ahead of him in this medieval, spy-filled world. The dialogue is sharp, even funny, and the plot is action-packed and fascinating. The themes of racism and co-operation will engage all younger teens. This book is a great gift of reading for all parents and grandparents to consider!

A Review of Dear Toni by Cyndi Sand-Eveland by Sara Harms - Thursday, Apr 02, 2009 at 7:07pm

Cyndi Sand-Eveland's exciting first book, Dear Toni, has the look of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series with the feel of a distinctly Canadian story.

I'm in love with a vampire...and his name isn't Edward. by Tracy Howard - Tuesday, Mar 24, 2009 at 4:23pm

Vampire romances are the most popular novels on our shelves these days, and the vampires all seem to be beautiful - a far cry from the original scary creatures of folk tales. In keeping with this new take on an old genre, Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey stands out for me for several reasons.

The novel doesn't take itself too seriously for one thing. There is excellent character development and the plot moves along at a quick pace. It has well-written dialogue, a spark of real chemistry between the two main characters, and even a romantic dance scene.

It's not easy being a nerd, as 12-year-old Ambrose knows only too well. The unlikely, endearing hero of Susin Nielsen's Word Nerd has bullies, no friends, and an overprotective mother. The only thing he is really good at is Scrabble.

One by Kathryn Otoshi by Tracy Howard - Sunday, Nov 02, 2008 at 11:50am

In this lovely new picture book, Blue is dreamy and sweet and generally happy with his colour - until hot-headed Red shows up. Red bullies Blue; he bullies Orange and Purple too. No colour can stand up to Red. Then one day a stranger arrives - straight as an arrow - Number 1. 1 is not afraid of Red and he puts an end to the bullying and gives the colours confidence to be all they can be - including numbers! This wonderful picture book covers several themes beautifully and seamlessly. I love the simpleness of the story and the way it can be used to illustrate colours, numbers, themes of acceptance and individuality. Mostly I loved the final message: "sometimes it just takes One".
